The car’s right front tire exploded at high speed, in close quarters, with a moving truck on one side and an unforgiving concrete wall on the other. The sound of scraping metal echoed through the Caldicott Tunnel as the little green Prius emerged and lurched onto the shoulder with heavy traffic rushing by. My 17-year-old daughter was driving.
I had [...]

How do our children’s experiences compare to our own experiences at the same age? The 2008 Duke University Child Well-Being Index compared high school seniors from 1975-1977 to seniors 28 years later (an average of one generation apart). There’s good news and bad news. Compared to their parents, America’s 21st century teens are much less [...]

My first time was at a Starbucks in JFK airport. It happened just last week. It was so subtle that I didn’t even notice it at first. While I was waiting in line, I glanced up at the menu — and there it was! Right beside every option on the menu, in an uncluttered, inviting [...]

Is the timetable for starting certain foods a culprit? “Try not to start your baby on solid foods before 6 months,” and, “Hold off on cow’s [...]

Sometimes accepting some side effects can help prevent worse side effects. We know that when a child is having an ongoing asthma attack, taking oral steroids for a few days can help turn the corner by reducing swelling and inflammation in the airways. However, studies in adults have shown that getting short courses of oral [...]

The diagnosis of ADHD increased 100 percent in just a decade. The percentage of kids who are overweight increased 100 percent between 1980 and 2002 (and increased 200 percent in teens). Is there a link between the two? Are kids diagnosed with ADHD more likely to be overweight? Or more likely to be underweight. It [...]

Some Seek Guidelines to Reflect Vitamin D’s Benefits - washingtonpost.com
This was an interesting article in the Washington Post (link above). It discusses both reasons for excitement and reasons for caution about vitamin D and sunshine.
The most optimistic statement came from Dr. Cedric Garland, a professor of family and preventive medicine at the Universtiy of California [...]

San Francisco became the target of legal action because of their March 2008 ordinance requiring that chain restaurants in the city disclose 4 things on their menus for each item: calories, saturated fat, carbohydrates, and sodium. Representatives of the chains, including McDonald’s and Burger King, filed a lawsuit in federal court arguing that the ordinance, among other things, [...]

Controversial new guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics call for more children to get their cholesterol checked, starting as young as age 2, and for some kids to be started on statin drugs to lower their cholesterol, starting as young as age 8. I’m glad that the controversy surrounding these guidelines is starting to [...]

An astonishing forty percent of healthy babies and toddlers in a recent study had low levels of vitamin D. Results of this important study appear in the June 2008 Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. Children can get vitamin D in the diet, but the skin can also make vitamin D in response to time [...]
