More Vitamin D Benefits

Some Seek Guidelines to Reflect Vitamin D’s Benefits - washingtonpost.com

This was an interesting article in the Washington Post (link above). It discusses both reasons for excitement and reasons for caution about vitamin D and sunshine.

The most optimistic statement came from Dr. Cedric Garland, a professor of family and preventive medicine at the Universtiy of California at San Diego. He said that if people started getting enough vitamin D, “the first thing we’d see is a reduction by 80 percent in the incidence of Typ 1 diabetes. The next thing we’d see is a reduction by about 75 percent of all invasive cancers combined, as well as similar reductions in colon cancer and breast cancer, and probably about a 25 percent reduction in ovarian cancer.”

As reported in the Vitamin Sunshine post here, about 40 percent of American babies and toddlers, and about 40 percent of American teens had suboptimal levels of vitamin D when tested.

It’s a sunny, summer day in California. I think I’ll go outside for a bit with the kids…
