Impaired but Empowered

I enjoyed discovering the inspiring blog of a mom whose daughter was born deaf. It chronicles the challenges and triumphs of a family overcoming the challenges that face the hearing impaired, with posts and videos of their speech therapy, advice about hearing aids and just beautiful moments between a mother and her daughter.

The blogger shared a video Dr. Greene did for Parents TV about earaches, and I’m heartened to know she enjoyed it.

Dr. Greene for President!

A big thank you to The Health Care Blog for the mention of the Society of Participatory Medicine. Dr. Greene has signed on as the first president of the new organization promoting Participatory Medicine as a way of giving patients themselves more information to participate in their own health care. We’re very proud to be involved with the pioneers who are leading the way to change.

I love Dr. Greene’s closing statements from the last Health 2.0 conference on “the dawn of patient-centered health care,” his philosophy that patient involvement and grassroots activism are the keys to reforming our health care system.

Dr. Greene makes Pediatric News

DrGreene.com and Dr. Greene have again made front-page news! The leading independent newspaper for pediatricians, Pediatric News, put Dr. Greene on the front page of their April edition, calling our site “one of the most elaborate Web sites of any pediatrician.” I love that the article notes that pediatricians were pioneers on the web in the mid-1990s, when the internet was in its infancy. We founded DrGreene.com in December 1995 because we decided providing free information to parents was a calling, not a business plan. The AMA has cited DrGreene.com as the pioneer physician Web site.

Alan and I dedicate our time and energy to sharing high-quality health information with you, our loyal readers. I’m proud we’ve been recognized by the pediatric community for this important work.

Cloth or disposable diapers – Which should you choose?

I can’t remember a time when parents weren’t weighing the pros and cons between cloth and disposable diapers. Disposable are convenient and perhaps more comfortable when baby’s wet, but cloth don’t go to landfills and aren’t made of plastic. How does a parent choose?

Dr. Greene was quoted in a recent article from the Minneapolis Star Tribune about the resurgence of cloth diapers. As he said, each has its benefits and drawbacks. But whatever you choose, he advises to avoid products with TBT, chlorine and fragrance.

But here’s something to ponder… studies have linked male infertility to diapers – heat in a diaper can cause damage to the testicles. Read more here.

Simple Things Parents Can Do to Protect Kids from Harmful Chemicals

I loved the straightforward tips that The Smart Mama summarized after her panel discussion with Dr. Greene and other environmental notables.

Take off shoes to reduce exposure to heavy metals and pesticides by as much as 65%;
Eat healthy and organic to reduce pesticide exposure and help the planet;
Green the cleaning supplies to reduce exposure to carcinogens, allergens and reproductive toxicants;
Green personal care products, particularly to reduce exposure to hormone disrupting phthalates found often in synthetic fragrance; and
Skip conventional chemical pesticides.

Makes it sound easy to get started, doesn’t it!

I was really touched with the in-depth article that Organic Broadcaster published based on Dr. Greene’s keynote speech at the 2009 Organic Farming Conference this past February in La Crosse, WI.

The article covers many of the major events in our lives that led to our realization that we needed to help families learn more about the things they can do to improve their health and the health of the environment. Homemade “Green” Cleaners

Readers responded to USA Today’s request to try out several cleaning recipes made with normal, household products. The testers used combinations of vinegar, castile soap, essential oils, baking soda, club soda, lemon juice and other favorites that the Greene household has used for years.

Welcome to the world, little Izzy!

We found Brian and Ruby’s blog, and we’re happy to announce the birth of Izzy, their little boy. His parents are getting used to the crazy schedule of a newborn, if you can ever get used to it, and we’re happy that his mom discovered the benefits of cabbage leaves for breastfeeding. If you refrigerate them then apply them to swollen breasts, they can provide relief from the pain and discomfort of aching breasts. It’s a surprising home remedy that really works!

I’m glad she’s getting the chance to start her Mommy Baby yoga classes soon, too. (Our favorite home DVD is from Anna Getty.). We’re big supporters of the slow, graceful poses that keep bodies moving and stress at bay, for both baby and mom.
